March brought Assistant White House Chef, Sam Kass and Deputy Under Secretary, Dr. Janey Thornton, to our Major Cities Training Symposium. Chef Kass spoke to School Nutrition Directors and Executive Chefs from the 40 largest districts in the country about the First Lady's Chefs Move to Schools Initiative, and Dr. Thornton addressed the new meal pattern and regulations, followed by Q&A from the audience. School Nutrition Directors and Executive Chefs from the 40 largest districts in the country arrived at NFSMI March 27th to attend the 2nd annual Major Cities Training Symposium. In addition to Chef Kass' and Dr. Thornton's presentations, the group enjoyed a webinar from the Scottish government which offered success stories and suggestions to deal with meeting nutrition standards. While the directors participated in round table discussions addressing ways to meet the new meal pattern regulations, executive chefs and dieticians were divided into teams to compete in a school chef Cook-Off. Judges included a local chef, NFSMI staff, and local students from Lafayette Middle School.
